What can you make on the weekly courses?
You can make anything you want and get the help you need with any project: there is no set curriculum. Just let us know your ideas and we'll help you achieve them and realise your sewing potential!
The courses are in synch with the school terms and are unending so you can come continuously.
If you are a complete beginner and need more guidance then we can offer you a bespoke course, structuring your time by making 2 projects, for example an A-line skirt and the sleeveless button-back top as featured in the book that accompanied the third Great British Sewing Bee series. Both projects will include basic techniques such as cutting out, seams, hems, inserting a zip, buttonholes, facings and understanding fit. It will be an intensive 6/7 weeks where you can make 2 lovely garments showcasing all that you've learnt. Alternatively if dress-making is not your thing then you can make a useful tote bag and zipped cushion cover which cover lots of exciting techniques too!
What type of projects have you covered in the past?
Since 2007, we have tutored on the following: dressmaking, soft furnishing including curtains and blinds, patchwork and quilting, machine embroidery, cross stitch, fabric screen printing, crochet and all the exciting variations inbetween!
What abilities do you cater for?
The mixed ability classes allow you to learn and gain inspiration from each other in a friendly and fun environment.
How many students are there in each class?
Classes have no more than 6 students and so include lots of personal attention and guidance.
How qualified and experienced is the tutor?
Angela worked in the fashion industry and interior design industry for over 20 years before setting up The Sewing Club in 2007. As well as a Honours degree in Fashion & Textile design she is qualified to teach and has experience of teaching adults and children since 1990. She has also gained experience over the years of mentoring GCSE, A level and degree students.
What is supplied on a course?
On a weekly course all equipment (scissors, marking tools, rulers etc) and modern sewing machines are supplied. We have a large library of dress patterns and books you can use and borrow. A small amount of fabric can be supplied for beginners to get you started, for example enough to make a lined tote bag or zipped cushion but subsequently you must venture out and get excited about buying your own fabric! Fabric is not supplied in the drop-in or taster sessions.
If you have your own sewing machine, but a bit unsure of what it can do then you can bring it along and learn on your own machine.
Can I start mid-term if I've missed the beginning of the course?
If the term has already started, please enquire as to whether we have a space for you; students work at their own pace so you can join up anytime and you won't have missed anything!
Do you offer a taster session?
You can always come for a one-off taster session (£20 for a 2hr session) on any course, just ask and we'll see if we can fit you in.
Please note what is supplied above, except for a taster session, fabric is not provided.
What if I miss a session, can I make it up?
We will endeavour to offer you another session on a different day but at The Sewing Club's discretion and only in the current term.
How can I book & pay?
To book and secure your place on a course, payment is in full and in advance of the course starting. You can pay by bank transfer, cheque or cash. Please request payment details via email, thank you.

CHANGES TO THE SEWING CLUB STUDIO FROM SEPTEMBER 2020:
We will now restrict class sizes to 4 students per session to allow for enough space around each work station. There will be no making up lessons on another day as these 4 students will form a "class bubble" for the full term and no one else will join that "bubble".
Movement in class
Students will be encouraged to stay seated and stand up at their own table if neccessary
Students can use our sewing machines or bring their own but they must bring the equipment they need, i.e. scissors, thread, unpicker, tape measure/ruler, pins.
A tea break is always welcome but we will encourage you to bring your own refreshments.
The teacher will wear a mask when she needs to show you a technique on the machine or help you with fitting a garment, as this is unavoildable both parties must wear a mask.
The studio will be cleaned between each session and hand sanitiser will be available outside the door before you enter the studio.
Payment will be by bank transfer only in advance of the course starting. There will be deadlines for payment so look out for the emails. You will receive a confirmation email stating you have a place.
